Methodology

Every displayed fact should answer three questions: where did it come from, how fresh is it, and what does it not prove?

What we do—and do not—test

TestedHelmets organizes and attributes independent safety evidence. We do not perform helmet testing, issue certifications, or create an independent safety score of our own. Source ratings, their methods, and their limitations remain the source’s work.

How to read a rating

Virginia Tech’s bicycle STAR score and star rating are source facts. Lower STAR scores indicate better performance within the compatible bicycle test methodology. They are not customer reviews, percentages, guarantees, or permission to compare incompatible helmet categories and methods. Read the full ratings guide before treating a number as a buying conclusion.

Catalog and product matching

A canonical helmet model, an independent source row, a retailer product, a seller, and an offer are different facts. An exact identifier or reviewed model/variant match can connect evidence; a similar title alone cannot. Ambiguous candidates remain withheld for review instead of silently becoming recommendations.

Recalls and product-safety warnings

The private safety system tracks CPSC recalls and official product-safety warnings as separate source families. A source must be authorized, successfully refreshed, fresh, and reconciled before it can support clearance. Disappearance from a source does not prove that a notice was resolved. The public evidence-only catalog does not publish per-helmet recall clearance, so readers should still check the exact product against current official notices.

Seller trust, condition, and freshness

A future shopping result must identify the retailer, seller, fulfillment path, condition, exact product, observation time, and policy outcome. Unknown marketplace sellers and used, refurbished, returned, or open-box helmets do not qualify by default. A stale or missing observation is withheld; it is never promoted as a current price or availability claim.

Publication is a separate decision

Retrieval, parsing, matching, safety clearance, offer eligibility, and public publication are independent gates. A successful private refresh cannot publish a page, price, link, or recommendation. The public evidence-only catalog publishes attributed rating facts and editorial guidance, but no current retail offers, current prices, recommendations, or affiliate URLs.

Commercial relationships

Future qualifying links may generate a commission. They will not change source ratings, seller-trust policy, recall checks, or organic ranking criteria. Sponsored placements, if ever added, must be clearly labeled and pass the same safety and trust gates.
