A rating, certification, or recommendation does not mean a helmet is “safe,” the “safest,” concussion-proof, or guaranteed to prevent death or injury. Laboratory methods model defined conditions and cannot reproduce every impact, rider, fit, environment, or use.
Verify the exact product and intended use
Before relying on any information, confirm the exact brand, model, version, model year, size, and certification on the physical helmet. Use a helmet intended and certified for the activity and speed involved. Evidence from one helmet category or methodology should not be treated as interchangeable with another.
Fit, condition, and instructions matter
Follow the manufacturer's current fitting, adjustment, use, care, storage, and replacement instructions. Inspect the shell, liner, straps, buckle, and retention system before use. Do not rely on a helmet that is used, counterfeit, recalled, damaged, has an unknown history, or has sustained an impact when replacement is required.
Check current recalls and warnings
Verify current manufacturer notices and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database before purchase and periodically during ownership. The absence of a result on TestedHelmets—or in any single search—is not proof that no recall, warning, or defect exists.
