Why rotational motion matters
Impacts are not always straight-on. An angled impact can produce both linear acceleration and rotational motion of the head. Helmet technologies can be designed to address parts of that motion, but real crashes vary and no single feature captures the whole performance of a helmet.
What the Mips label tells you
It tells you that the helmet includes a Mips-branded system. The exact construction can differ by helmet. For the particular model and size you are considering, check the manufacturer’s description and physical labeling rather than assuming every Mips system is identical.
What the label does not tell you
- It is not an independent comparative score.
- It is not a substitute for the helmet’s applicable regulatory certification.
- It does not show whether the helmet fits and remains correctly positioned on your head.
- It does not prove the helmet will prevent concussion or another injury.
Compare the whole helmet
Use independent test results, where available, to compare the performance of complete helmet models—not just one named feature. Then check intended use, fit, retention, condition, certification, manufacturer guidance, and current recalls. A helmet that does not fit securely is not rescued by a technology label.
